Walk 1000 miles in 2017

If you need an incentive to get out walking Live for the Outdoors host a yearly challenge where you pledge to walk 1000 miles in a year. You can sign up here. It sounds like a lot but it breaks down to just 2.74 miles per day and taking part in a weekly longer walk can really boost you mileage. You can even buy a t-shirt or mug to show you’re taking part here.

Brown's Folly Nature Reserve - 8.1.17 *FEATURED WALK*

Happy New Year from Bath Ramblings. We are pleased to offer you our second fully featured walk which is a 4.5 mile (approx) circular hike starting and ending at St Swithin’s Church Bathford. ‘This very pleasant walk (thanks to Nigel Vile) started from St Swithun’s Church in Bathford before starting a steep climb up to Brown’s Folly. Following a pause to recover it was a gentle walk through the Nature Reserve down to the main road then a brief walk before descending under the road via the dry arch.

Dunkerton - 21.8.16

An approximately 5 mile walk starting and ending near Odd Down Park-and-Ride. This walk started from Odd Down Football Club on a chilly August morning. After a short walk along Combe Hay Lane the tarmac was left behind for fields, woodland and brook side paths down to Dunkerton and back through Combe Hay. Although it was August there was still a surprising variety of wild flowers and the blackberries and sloes were ripening well.

Box - 17.7.16

Box - South Side This walk started from Selwyn Hall car park and went through part of Box - where there is a house called The Old Sweet Factory although no details are known about its history. Crossing the High Street the walk went through Henley then cut across Kingsdown Golf Course before returning through Ashley. It was a glorious day with lovely summer views across the rolling Wiltshire country side and the drinks break in a wonderful flower meadow was just like old times.

Monkton Farleigh - 20.3.16

This walk started in Monkton Farleigh and almost immediately went along a tree lined avenue from the manor house for something over a mile until the imposing gates at the carriage entrance were reached. Then north towards Kingsdown walking along the Macmillan Way, crossing the Roman Road and onto the Palladian Way before returning to Monkton Farleigh. This was an almost level walk with masses of snowdrops and daffodils together with the birds celebrating the arrival of spring.

Lansdown - 14.2.16

A circular walk north of Bath starting and ending at Lansdown park-and-ride. The walk started from Lansdown Park and Ride, through the race course and on through the battlefields. It then skirted Pipley Woods before heading for Prospect Stile with clear views beyond Kelston Roundhill. Although there was a biting wind at times it was a lovely clear, sunny day which gave views across Bristol to South Wales (just) and the Second Severn Crossing.

Bradford-On-Avon - 21.6.15

Bradford-on-Avon A relatively easy walk for the longest day of the year. Although it was the first day of summer, someone forgot to tell the clouds which were present most of the time. Starting from the station car park in Bradford-on-Avon the walk was along the river towards Avoncliff and back down the canal. The canal was busy with boats and some ducklings and a lot of people were out and about both on foot and bike.

Newton-St-Loe - 4.1.15

This is a really varied route - through woods, bridle paths, country lanes. It’s quite hilly so there would usually be good views but today the weather was dank and foggy so we couldn’t see very far. For the first half mile we were joined by a sweet little black kitten who seemed to think we were headed somewhere interesting. There wasn’t much else in the way of ‘wild’ life - probably all sheltering from the cold.

Circuit of Bath walk 2013

This is a charity walk organised by Julian House. The complete route is a whole day affair but you can choose to do just one or more smaller sections of it. There are some amazing views, especially from the top of Little Solsbury Hill and as the walk usually happens in September it is an excellent opportunity to do some foraging - blackberries and sloes are abundant along the way.
